About Me
Hello, I’m Dr. Carl Bryce.
I am a Health Psychologist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS).
I hold a Doctorate in Health Psychology, an MSc in Health Psychology, and a BSc in Psychology. In addition to running my private practice, I work in the Clinical Health Psychology department at Salford Royal Hospital, Greater Manchester, supporting patients with a variety of physical health conditions.
I am dedicated to ongoing professional development, continually enhancing my skills and knowledge to benefit my clients. Beyond my clinical work, I take great interest in developing and delivering training programs for healthcare professionals across various departments within the hospital and other healthcare settings.
Dr Carl Bryce (DHealthPsych, MSc, BSc, CPsychol)
My Background
Before my interest in psychology, I was initially (and still am) passionate about health and fitness. This passion started from my time serving as a soldier in the British Army, where one of my roles was to lead physical training for other soldiers, ensuring they were in peak physical condition to deploy on operations when needed.
My curiosity about psychology, however, began during a tour to Afghanistan in 2006, where I became aware of the complexities of the human mind and the impact stress could have on both physical and mental health.
A few years later, in 2009, I moved from the military into academia and enrolled on a Psychology undergraduate degree at the University of Salford. To support my academic pursuits, I worked as a Personal Trainer, balancing my passion for physical health with my growing interest in psychology.
Given my passion for both physical and mental health, having passed the psychology degree with First Class Honours, it was a natural progression to specialise in Health Psychology – a branch of psychology dedicated to understanding how thoughts, emotions, and behaviours influence overall health and well-being, and equally, how health conditions can reshape our mental and emotional states.
As a result, I went on to earn a Distinction in the Health Psychology Master's Degree at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) (2016) and eventually earned a Professional Doctorate in Health Psychology at Staffordshire University.
Alongside my private practice, I currently work in the NHS at Salford Royal Hospital, Greater Manchester. Working in the General Medicine team, which sits within the Clinical Health Psychology service, I provide psychological care to patients across 15 different medical departments, including diabetes, dermatology, cardiology, respiratory, immunology, and many more.
In my current role at Salford Royal Hospital, I have worked extensively with individuals managing a wide range of complex health conditions such as diabetes (type 1 and 2), severe eczema, allergies, palsy, COPD, cancer, tinnitus, and those undergoing major medical procedures, including open-heart surgery and stoma placements. My work involves helping patients navigate the emotional challenges that come with chronic and acute health conditions, enabling them to improve their overall well-being, coping strategies, and quality of life.
My methods
I employ a diverse range of strategies tailored to meet the individual needs of each patient, all grounded in evidence-based practices. Below are some of the primary therapeutic approaches I integrate into my work.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
A structured, time-limited approach focused on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviours.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Focuses on accepting difficult emotions and thoughts while committing to actions that align with personal values.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)
A specialised form of CBT that helps individuals process and overcome the impact of traumatic experiences.
Rationale Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT)
A form of CBT that emphasises identifying and disputing irrational beliefs to foster emotional well-being.
